How to tell if you were directed

Read your renewal notice.

  • If it says “Smog Certification Required at a STAR Station” → you’ve been directed. You need a STAR station specifically.
  • If it just says a smog certification is required, with no mention of STAR → you weren’t directed. You can go anywhere, including here.

Not sure? Call us and read the line to us. It takes thirty seconds.

Why a regular station can’t help you

This is the part that costs people a second trip and a second payment.

A non-STAR station can test your vehicle and can hand you a certificate. But if the DMV directed you to a STAR station, that certificate won’t be accepted for your renewal. You’d have paid twice and tested twice for one registration.

Only a STAR certified station can close out a directed vehicle.

Why was my car directed?

Nothing to do with you, and usually nothing to do with your specific car.

The state selects a portion of vehicles for STAR inspection based on the vehicle’s profile and inspection history — make, model, model year, and how vehicles like yours have performed on past tests. It’s a statistical selection, not a judgment.

Being directed doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your vehicle, and it doesn’t make the test harder to pass.

Are STAR stations harder to pass?

No. And this is worth being precise about, because people assume the opposite.

The pass/fail standards are identical at every licensed station in California — same equipment, same thresholds, same state software. A vehicle that passes at one station passes at all of them.

What’s different is the station, not the test. STAR stations are monitored more closely by the Bureau of Automotive Repair and held to performance standards that non-STAR stations aren’t. Your car doesn’t face a tougher test. We do.

Not all STAR stations are the same

STAR test-only vs test-and-repair

Test-and-repair STAR stations inspect your vehicle and can also repair it.

JB Smog Check is STAR test-only. We’re licensed to inspect and legally prohibited from repairing. Same STAR certification — but we can’t profit from anything we find, which means our diagnosis has nothing riding on it.

One more practical difference: gross polluters must be certified at a test-only station. If your vehicle was flagged as a gross polluter, a test-and-repair station can’t finish the job. We can.

Retests

If your directed vehicle fails, the retest also has to happen at a STAR station. Get it repaired wherever you like, then bring it back to us.

How do I know if I was directed to a STAR station?

Read your DMV renewal notice. If it says “Smog Certification Required at a STAR Station,” you’ve been directed and need a STAR station specifically. If it only says a smog certification is required, you weren’t directed and can test anywhere — including here.

Is JB Smog Check STAR certified?

Yes. We’re a STAR certified, test-only station licensed by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair under license #298833. You can verify that number on the state’s license lookup — the record lists us as a test-only (TC) station.

Can I just go to a regular station instead?

No — and this is the part that costs people a second trip. A non-STAR station can test your car and hand you a certificate, but if the DMV directed you to a STAR station, that certificate won’t be accepted for your renewal. You’d pay and test twice.

Does a STAR station cost more here?

Not at JB Smog Check. Our price is $41.75 plus the $8.25 state certificate whether you were directed or not. STAR certification is a standard we’re held to, not a surcharge you pay.

Are STAR stations harder to pass?

No. The pass and fail standards are identical at every licensed station in California — same equipment, same thresholds, same state software. STAR stations are just monitored more closely by the BAR. Your car doesn’t face a tougher test; the station does.

Is every STAR station test-only?

No. Some STAR stations are test-and-repair. JB Smog Check is STAR test-only — licensed to inspect, prohibited from repairing. Same STAR certification, but we can’t profit from anything we find. And gross polluters have to be certified at a test-only station like ours.

My notice doesn't mention STAR. Can I still come?

Yes. A STAR station can test any vehicle, directed or not. If you weren’t directed, you have your pick of stations — the price and the free pretest are the same for you either way.

How do I verify you're really STAR certified?

Look up BAR license #298833 on the state license lookup at search.dca.ca.gov, or find us on the BAR station locator at bar.ca.gov. Any station can hang a STAR sign; the state’s record is what counts.

Do I retest here if I failed?

Yes — if your vehicle was directed to a STAR station, the retest after repairs also has to happen at one. Get it fixed wherever you like and bring it back to us.
