Why there’s a separate $8.25
Because it isn’t ours.
The $8.25 certificate fee is set by the State of California and collected by every smog station in the state. It’s remitted to the DMV when your certificate is issued. No station can discount it, waive it, or bundle it — and any station advertising a price that quietly excludes it is doing the same thing we’re doing, just less clearly.
You only pay it if your vehicle passes.
Why older vehicles cost more
Different test entirely.
Vehicles from 2000 onward are inspected through the onboard computer — we connect to the OBD-II port and read the data. Quick.
Vehicles from 1999 and earlier need an actual tailpipe emissions measurement, with the car running on the dynamometer. More equipment, more time, more work. That’s the $10.
Pass or don’t pay
The free pretest — and what it means
Once a smog test is submitted to the state, it’s permanent. A failure follows the vehicle and shows up in its inspection history for anyone who looks.
So we check first, off the record. If the pretest shows your vehicle isn’t going to pass, we stop and tell you why. No fee, and no failed test on your record. You go fix it and come back. You only pay when we run the real test.
That’s what “pass or don’t pay” means here — not a gimmick, a sequence.
