What we test
Everything the DMV can ask you for. We’re a test-only station, which means we’re licensed to inspect and prohibited from repairing — so there’s never a reason to fail you.

Does your hybrid need a smog check? Yes.
This is the most common misunderstanding we hear at the counter, and it costs people late fees.
California treats gasoline-electric hybrids exactly like gasoline vehicles. A Prius, Insight, Accord Hybrid, Escape Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid needs a smog check on the same schedule as any other car. Plug-in hybrids follow the same rules.
Only fully electric vehicles are exempt. If it burns gasoline at any point, it gets tested.
Is your car too new to need one?
Gasoline vehicles are exempt from the biennial smog check for their first eight model years. Instead of testing, you pay an annual smog abatement fee through the DMV.
In 2026 that means 2019 and newer are exempt, and 2018 model-year vehicles are being asked for a smog check for the first time.
Two exceptions where the eight-year rule doesn’t help you:
- Selling the vehicle — a change-of-ownership smog check is still required
- Registering from out of state — an initial inspection is still required
Your DMV renewal notice is the authority. If you’re holding it and can’t make sense of it, call us and read it to us — it takes about a minute to sort out.
The test itself
What actually happens
STEP 01
Visual inspection
We confirm the emissions components are present, connected, and untampered with. Missing or modified equipment fails here, before the analyzer is connected.
STEP 02
Functional check + analyzer
We verify the systems work, then connect through the OBD-II port. Vehicles from 1999 and earlier get a tailpipe test on the dynamometer instead — which is why they cost $10 more.
STEP 03
Filed for you
Pass, and your certificate goes to the DMV electronically the same moment. Renew online before you’ve left the lot. Certificates are valid 90 days.
Why test-only matters
We’re licensed by the state to inspect vehicles and prohibited from repairing them. Not “we choose not to” — legally cannot.
Every station that can also fix your car has a financial reason to want it to fail. We don’t have one. When we tell you what’s wrong, that’s the only thing we’re able to give you: the answer.

Before you come in
Four things that decide whether you pass
Drive it 15 minutes first
A warm engine and hot catalytic converter burn cleaner. A car brought in cold fails tests it would otherwise pass.
Check engine light off
An illuminated check engine light is an automatic fail on any OBD-II vehicle. No exceptions.
Fix known problems first
A failed test goes on the permanent record and follows the vehicle. Repair before you test.
Leave emissions equipment alone
Tampered or missing components fail on the visual inspection, before the analyzer runs.

“$41.75 for the inspection on 2000-and-newer vehicles, plus the $8.25 state certificate fee — $50.00 total. Vehicles from 1999 and older are $10 more because they need a tailpipe test rather than an OBD-II scan. The $8.25 is set by the state and charged only if your vehicle passes.
Do I need an appointment?
No. We’re walk-in only. Drive up any time we’re open — Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Arrive at least 20 minutes before we close so there’s time to finish the test.
How long does it take?
About 15 to 20 minutes for most vehicles. Older vehicles that need the tailpipe test take a bit longer. If you want to check the wait before you leave, call (951) 361-0704.
What do I need to bring?
Your vehicle and your DMV renewal notice if you have it. We can look your vehicle up from the plate or VIN without it. Payment is due when the test is finished — we take Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, debit and cash.

Yes. We test diesel vehicles from model year 1998 onward with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 lbs or under. Diesels from 1997 or earlier, and any diesel over 14,000 lbs GVWR, are outside the smog check program.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
We’ll explain exactly why it failed and what needs attention. Because we’re test-only, we can’t repair it — you take it to any shop you like, then bring it back to us for the retest. Our free pretest is designed to catch problems before the official test, so a failure never goes on your record by surprise.
How long is my certificate good for?
90 days from the day it’s issued. We file it with the DMV electronically the moment you pass, so you can complete your registration online before you leave the parking lot.
